Welcome to Norfolk! Upon arrival, you will be transferred to your accommodation, where you’ll be staying for the next seven nights. Your rental vehicle will be ready and waiting for you at your accommodation for your convenience. This morning, Brisbane guests will enjoy the Island Life Tour and will spend a delightful morning touring Norfolk Island, gaining a true insight into the intricate nature of modern island life. Your guide will share the latest information on the island's ethnic groups, nationalities and languages spoken, including the Norfolk Island indigenous language. Hear how and where islanders are born, educated, find work and careers, attend their various churches, are cared for in advancing years and eventually accorded free burial in a carefully tended community graveyard. Experienced leaders will explain the eight original family groups, how their cultural traits are fostered, valued and maintained in today's daily life. Learn about how the island generates its electricity, gains its supply of gas, ships in petroleum products, food and the material needs of life. The making of roads, the maintenance of medical, health services and environmental issues are explained. How modern life is experienced in Norfolk Island is what this tour is all about. Morning tea is included, and the tour concludes with lunch at the Boatshed Restaurant.
Day 3All Guests Kapyong Day RSL Welcome This morning the Sydney guests will enjoy the Island Life Tour including morning tea and lunch. Brisbane guests enjoy a morning at leisure. Later this afternoon all guests make your way to the Norfolk Island RSL Memorial Club. The club offers a welcoming atmosphere steeped in the island's rich history and camaraderie. Originally established by returning servicemen after World War II, the club has grown from its humble beginnings in a passionfruit shed to become one of Burnt Pine’s significant social venues. Following the Kapyong Day Service, guests will enjoy some welcome nibbles accompanied by a complimentary beer or wine.
Day 4All Guests at Leisure Included in your package are a selection of self-guided (DIY) tours, designed to help you explore Norfolk Island at your own pace. You’ll receive six tours in total, each offering a unique perspective on the island’s rich history, culture, language, national parks, and hidden gems. Take your time, roll down the windows, and breathe in the fresh island air. And don’t forget to wave to everyone — it’s the Norfolk way.
Day 5Lest We Forget (L) The Dawn Service on Norfolk Island holds a unique significance as one of the first ANZAC Day commemorations to take place each year in Australia, owing to the island's easterly location. Held on the shores of Emily Bay as the sun rises over the lagoon, the service offers a poignant and intimate setting for remembrance. The gentle lapping of waves and the silhouette of the island's own Lone Pine in the distance create a powerful atmosphere for reflection on the sacrifices made by service men and women, including the many Norfolk Islanders who have served in various conflicts. A Gunfire breakfast for veterans only will follow the service. Mid-morning veterans and family representatives assemble at the Officer’s Bath in Quality Row to commence the march to the Cenotaph for the mid-morning service. A traditional ANZAC Day lunch is held at the Norfolk Island RSL followed by a game of 2up.
Day 6All Guests Norfolk Military Museum Tour & RSL Dinner (D) Late this afternoon, meet at the Norfolk Island Military Museum for a private guided tour. The museum proudly showcases a remarkable collection of memorabilia and artefacts, honouring the service of Norfolk Island men and women across all wars and conflicts since the Boer War. In addition to military history, the museum highlights the construction of the Norfolk Island Airport during World War II and includes a significant exhibit relating to the Pitcairn Settlement, offering further insight into the island's unique heritage. Following the tour, dinner will be enjoyed at the Club.
Day 7All Guests Wars of Change Tour This morning, join a guided tour that explores how the idyllic character of Norfolk Island was profoundly impacted by the events of World War II. Your guide will delve into the social changes that occurred when a significant portion of the island’s male population left to serve in the armed forces, and the equally transformative effects of defence troops being stationed on the island. Learn about the wartime construction of the Norfolk Island airport, including the removal of a mile-long avenue of mature island pines and the displacement of island homes to accommodate the project. The tour also includes visits to key wartime sites, featuring equipment emplacements, radar stations, troop accommodation areas, and water supply facilities, offering a insight into this significant chapter of the island’s history. Also included in your package is a pass to the World of Norfolk Exhibit which brings to life a rich tapestry of stories that collectively celebrate Norfolk Island, its people, unique history, breathtaking landscapes, and vibrant culture. Featuring world-class visual displays and 28 custom built glass interpretation panels you'll feel immersed in a memorable 'World'.
